Interior design styles in Hyderabad: choosing one that holds up

Most guides to interior design styles in Hyderabad are catalogues. Fifteen names, a stock photograph each, and no answer to the question that matters, which is which of them will still look right in six years. That is harder here, because homes in the western corridor are larger, the afternoon light is stronger, and entertaining at home is more formal. Five directions follow. For each, who it suits, what it costs in upkeep, and how it ages. Some of it is written to talk you out of a style.

01 Start with the flat, not the mood board

Three bedroom flats around Kokapet, Narsingi and the Financial District commonly run 1,700 to 2,400 square feet, and four bedroom homes start near 2,500. A detail dense scheme survives a compact flat because the eye has nowhere to rest anyway, and turns restless at 2,600. The commoner failure is the reverse: a nine metre wall left nearly bare, which reads as unfinished rather than minimal.

Then the light. April and May afternoons sit near 40 degrees, harder than most southern Indian design writing assumes, and west glazing takes it from two o’clock. High gloss white becomes a glare panel. Saturated pigment on a sunlit wall loses depth in two summers. Matt, mid tone finishes hold up, and dark veneer stays cooler to touch. The corridor is also still a building site, so fluting, open shelves and mirror need a cleaning routine.

02 Contemporary Indian, and warm minimal

Contemporary Indian is the safest of the five and the hardest to get wrong. Character carried by material: fluted wood, cane inserts, brass inlay lines, a jaali screen, terrazzo underfoot, one colour allowed to lead. Unlacquered brass tarnishes, so it wants a regular wipe or a factory lacquer. Hyderabad’s dry air is kind to cane, which sags in humid coastal cities.

Warm minimal is the opposite bet. Few materials, long runs, handleless shutters, interest carried by plaster texture and grain. The trap is cost. Restraint is more expensive than decoration, because with nothing to look at everything becomes a tolerance question, and a two millimetre drift in a shadow gap across five metres is visible from the sofa. Done cheaply it looks thin within three years.

03 Gold and marble, hand painted work, and the restrained option

Classic contemporary is what much of Hyderabad actually wants. Formal entertaining is normal, guests are seated rather than circulating, and that earns a real dining room with a chandelier and a cove to lift the ceiling. What keeps it out of hotel lobby territory is treating gold as a line rather than a mass. Specify PVD coated stainless at hand height, because electroplated trim wears through where people touch it.

Marble deserves a straight answer. It belongs on vertical surfaces and low traffic floors: a wall behind a sofa, an entry, a clad column. Not a kitchen counter, a dining top or the ring around a basin. It is calcium carbonate, so lemon, tamarind and bathroom cleaners etch it, and etching is a dulled mark in the stone, not a stain on top of it. A sealer slows turmeric and oil and does nothing about etching. Put sintered stone or porcelain on the counter, marble on the wall behind. Engineered quartz is not the answer near heat either, since its resin binder begins failing around 150 degrees.

Craft led work, of which a hand painted mural is the clearest case, is the most personal option and the least reversible. A mural needs a skim coated and primed wall, not raw putty, and two coats of water based matt or satin clear over the artwork. Without that, the first damp wipe lifts pigment. Restrained modern, the fifth direction, is often the most intelligent choice in a large flat. One full height wardrobe run, the television absorbed into the same panel, everything flush. Which raises the mirrored panel, treated as a default and rarely as a decision. It earns its place, giving a full length mirror without spending floor area. But six millimetre mirror on a 600 millimetre hinged shutter is heavy, so the hinges must be rated for it and the shutter needs a proper backing board.

04 What to check in your own home

• Stand in the living room at four in the afternoon. Note where the sun actually lands, and which wall you would not put a mural on.
• Measure your longest uninterrupted wall. Over five metres, decide now what happens to it: joinery, stone, panelling or art.
• Sort the marble question by surface. Write vertical or horizontal against every place you want stone. Every horizontal one probably wants sintered stone or porcelain instead.
• Ask what sits behind each feature. Skim coat, primer and a clear coat under a mural. A proper backing board behind mirror. Rated hinges on any heavy shutter.
• Count the dust traps before approving the design. Flutes, open shelves, mirror and brass all photograph well. Keep as many as your household will genuinely maintain.

A Vastu note for a flat whose orientation is already fixed

Vastu is asked about earlier and in more detail here than in most cities, usually as specific questions rather than a general preference. Entry direction, plumbing stacks and building orientation were fixed long before you saw the flat. What design still controls is real: which way the head of the bed faces, whether the north east corner stays light rather than loaded with heavy storage, where mirrors are placed, and where the prayer space goes.
