Vastu for Your Kitchen, Living Room and Dining Space
The three spaces that carry the greatest daily energy in any home — kitchen, living room, and dining area.
Of all the rooms in your home, three spaces carry the greatest daily energy charge: the kitchen, where nourishment is created; the living room, where the family gathers; and the dining room, where they come together to eat. In Vastu, these three spaces are most directly connected to health, prosperity, and the social vitality of the household.
This guide focuses specifically on these three rooms — with infographics, placement diagrams, and practical notes from Furdo’s designers who work on luxury apartments in Bangalore and Hyderabad every day.
01 The Kitchen
Best Hob Placement — Compass View
Water vs. Fire — Keep Them Separated
| Element | Recommendation | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen location | ✓ Best SE corner | Agni Moola — the fire zone. Best energy for cooking and nourishment. |
| Hob placement | ✓ Best SE wall, cook faces East | Facing the rising sun while cooking brings positive energy to the meal. |
| Sink placement | ✓ Best North or NE side | Water and fire must be separated — at least 600mm between hob and sink. |
| Heavy storage/pantry | ✓ Best South or West wall | Heavy elements anchored to the grounding south/west direction. |
| Kitchen location (alt) | ~ OK NW corner | Acceptable if SE is fixed as a bathroom in your apartment layout. |
| Refrigerator | ~ OK West or SW | Avoid NE — do not block the spiritual zone with appliances. |
| Kitchen in NE | ✗ Avoid | Fire in the water/spiritual zone — causes health and financial disturbance. |
| Hob and sink adjacent | ✗ Avoid | Water and fire directly side-by-side creates elemental conflict. |
| Toilet wall shared with hob | ✗ Avoid | The most serious kitchen Vastu violation. Raise with your architect early. |
Design two distinct zones: the cook’s workflow on the south/SE counter (facing east), and the homeowner’s zone near the kitchen opening. Always specify Hettich Quadro Draw channels — never telescopic. If plumbing forces the sink into a non-ideal position, place a small copper vessel on the north wall of the kitchen as an elemental remedy.
02 The Living Room
The Brahmasthan — The Centre Must Stay Clear
| Element | Recommendation | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Living room location | ✓ Best North, East, or NE | Open, bright, positive energy — best for social spaces and morning light. |
| Heavy sofa/sectional | ✓ Best South or West wall | Heavy elements belong in the heavy south/west direction. Keeps NE open and airy. |
| TV unit | ✓ Best East or North wall | Viewers naturally face east or north — positive directional energy during leisure. |
| Centre (Brahmasthan) | ✓ Best Completely clear | The geometric centre of the room must be free of heavy, fixed elements. |
| NW living room | ~ OK | Good for social energy and guests. Slightly less stable than N/E/NE but perfectly workable. |
| Centre coffee table | ~ OK Lightweight only | Glass or cane table at centre is acceptable. Never heavy stone or solid wood. |
| Heavy furniture at centre | ✗ Avoid | Obstructs Brahmasthan. Causes stagnation of energy in the home’s core. |
| Mirror opposite entrance | ✗ Avoid | Pushes incoming positive energy back out through the main door. |
| Conflict artwork | ✗ Avoid | No violent, lonely, or predatory imagery. These subtly affect collective household mood. |
03 The Dining Space
Table Shape and Best Facing Direction
| Element | Recommendation | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Dining location | ✓ Best West or NW zone | Optimal direction for nourishment, satisfaction, and positive family energy. |
| Table shape | ✓ Best Square or rectangle | Stability and equal energy distribution across all seats. |
| Facing direction | ✓ Best East or North | Primary earner should not face South at the dining table. |
| Crockery unit | ✓ Best West wall | Displaying abundance on the west wall is auspicious in South Indian Vastu. |
| Mirror on North wall | ~ OK Framed only | Symbolically doubles the food — an old South Indian tradition. |
| Circular or oval table | ✗ Avoid | No structural corners of stability. Round tables belong in informal spaces. |
| Toilet door visible | ✗ Avoid | Any sightline from the dining table to a bathroom door must be broken. |
| Beam above table | ✗ Avoid | Oppressive energy overhead during meals. Redesign false ceiling to mask it. |
When the Layout Doesn’t Cooperate
Apartment layouts fix many things — plumbing, structural walls, slab openings. When Vastu-ideal positions aren’t available, Furdo uses design to compensate:
- If the hob can’t face East, introduce a small copper vessel or brass fixture near the cooking zone as an elemental anchor
- If the sink and hob are adjacent, a marble slab divider or change in counter material creates an energetic boundary
- If the dining table has a toilet door in its sightline, a fluted glass panel, a bookshelf, or a tall plant breaks the line cleanly
- If the living room centre can’t be fully cleared, a lightweight glass coffee table reads as transparent and doesn’t obstruct Brahmasthan
Frequently Asked Questions
- Our kitchen is in the SW corner. Is there a remedy without breaking walls?
- SW kitchen is not ideal but manageable. Position the hob on the east-facing wall within the kitchen, keep the NE corner completely free of storage, and place a copper vessel near the cooking area. Most importantly, design so the cook faces east or north — this is the most impactful adjustment you can make without any structural change.
- We love our round dining table. Is there really a Vastu issue?
- Vastu’s preference for rectangular tables comes from the principle of structural stability. If a round table is important to you, ensure the placement, location, and facing directions are correct. The table shape is the least important factor compared to where you’ve positioned the dining area itself.
- Is an open-plan kitchen-living layout compatible with Vastu?
- Yes, with care. The cooking zone (fire element) should be clearly separated from the living/dining zones through materials, ceiling height, or a partial island. An open plan where the kitchen is in the SE and the living flows northward is an excellent Vastu layout.
